Upcycle Old Book into Paper Cone Wreath

Pari’s Summer Vacation is about to over and she has been conscious about it last few days. For a 4-year old, change is not easy. Being at home for over two months; not having to get up early (I am not an early bird and neither is she!) to catch the school bus; no strict routine so to say; and lots of art and craft fun at home made for a leisurely as well as playful vacation.
Talking about art and craft, we did quite a few projects using varied media and themes. All types of colours, clay, play dough, flour dough, tissue paper, newspaper, used boxes, crates and much more.
Themes she explored were pretty interesting and broad-based as well. Arctic animals, baking and cooking, collage, upcycling and music/keyboard -on an ongoing basis.
The most recent craft activity was for Father’s Day. After this we went for a week’s holiday to Puri. (Will write about this trip in a few days). As part of Father’s day gift , we did a clever thing. While clearing the closets, I came across Avie’s (my hubby) books from the Engineering days. They have been gathering dust since years. I thought, rather than save it without any purpose, why not have it repurposed by Pari herself as a Father’s day gift.

So, a few pages from the book were folded into cones. Pari did this on her own after a few demonstrations.
Glue was duly applied on the inside as well as outside so that the cones won’t open up. I cut out a circle from a cardboard box and let Pari glue the cones at the centre with the broad open side facing outward. Also, pasted a circle on top – in the centre – to hold everything intact.

She wanted her favourite media – glitters to be used by hook or by crook. So, I thought it best that she sprinkles some on the inside of the cone (the longer side). Fascinated that they are – these 3-4 years olds – with colours, she wanted to use glitters in every colour that we had in stock. Though a little too colourful for my liking, the cones happily flaunted red and magenta and silver and golden glitters!
Not happy with the limited number of media used until then, she wanted to play with water colours. So, instead of having her splatter the colours all over the white cones, I thought, why not have her draw some consistent patterns. And wavy lines was what she did on each cone. The lines emerging from the centre and making the whole thing look somewhat like a glowing sun!
